
AI Upskilling Initiative Alumni Association of the University of Peradeniya (AAUP)
The Alumni Association of the University of Peradeniya (AAUP), in collaboration with the Lanka Education and Research Network (LEARN), proudly launched the AI Upskilling Initiative on 14th July 2025 at the Conference Hall, Postgraduate Institute of Science (PGIS), University of Peradeniya. This landmark event marked the opening of AI Skills Week and was designed to empower students, professionals, and educators across disciplines with essential AI literacy and future-ready skills. The event was held in a hybrid format, allowing participation both onsite and online via Zoom.
The program commenced with a welcome address by Professor Emerita Deepthi Bandara, President of AAUP, followed by an opening speech by Professor Terrance Madujith, Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya. The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Samudra Kanankearachchi, Director of Technology at 99X, on the topic “AI Fluency: A Core Skill for the Modern Professional.” Following this, Professor Roshan Ragel, Vice President for Education at AAUP, introduced the goals and scope of the AI Upskilling Initiative.
A key highlight of the event was the panel discussion titled “Upskilling Through AI: Opportunities, Realities & Roles,” featuring esteemed panelists: Professor Ranjith Pallegama (Deputy Vice Chancellor), Professor Emerita Deepthi Bandara, Professor Roshan Ragel, and Mr. Samudra Kanankearachchi. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Asitha Bandaranayake. The session explored how AI is transforming skill development across various fields, including for individuals without a technical background.
