The Alumni Association of the University of Peradeniya is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Emeritus Vidya Nidhi Lakshman Dissanayake as the seventeenth Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, effective July 16, 2025. This prestigious role is a testament to Professor Dissanayake’s exceptional contributions as a scientist, educator, and visionary leader.

Professor Lakshman Dissanayake graduated with a B.Sc. (Honors) in Physics from the University of Peradeniya in 1970 and obtained his Ph.D. in Experimental Solid-State Physics from Indiana University, Bloomington, USA in 1977. He has held several important positions at the University of Peradeniya, including Professor of Physics, Head of the Department of Physics, and Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Science.

Before his appointment as Chancellor, Professor Dissanayake served as a Research Professor in condensed matter physics and solid-state ionic research at the National Institute of Fundamental Studies. He is internationally recognized for his achievements in research. According to the AD Scientific Index 2023, he is listed among the top 2% of scientists worldwide and is ranked as the leading scientist in materials engineering in Sri Lanka.

Throughout his career, Professor Dissanayake has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to advancing science, enriching higher education, and fostering national development. His enduring passion and visionary leadership have inspired countless individuals, raising the standards of research and innovation both in Sri Lanka and beyond.

As the Patron of the Alumni Association, Professor Dissanayake’s guidance and leadership are greatly anticipated as we embark on future projects and initiatives.
