Japan is the first country that has modernized from a non-Western background to establish a free, democratic, prosperous, and peace-loving nation based on the rule of law, without losing much of its tradition and identity. The course captures some highlights of Japan's Modernization process.
06th SLJCR 2018 was on 31 August- 01 September, 2018 at the Postgraduate Institute of Science (PGIS), University of Peradeniya.
The โSeminar on Higher Education Opportunities in Japanโ was conducted for the for students to encourage and provide guidance to pursue their undergraduate or postgraduate higher studies in Japan.
On 31 September 2018, pre- conference workshops was conducted as โBridge to Japanโ at the PGIS for the academia of University of Peradeniya focusing on forming research partnerships with Japanese researchers to produce collaborative research.
The International Affairs Office coordinated and conducted the annual Student Exchange Program with the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan from 25 August - 02 September 2018. The program included a lecture series, field visits as well as interaction sessions with students from both Universities.
Sri Lanka Japan Study Centre (SLJSC), University of Peradeniya organized a โJapanese Taiko Festivalโ on July 03, 2015 at 5.00 p.m. in the Appadurai Auditorium, Faculty of Agriculture Library Complex.
Sri Lanka Japan Study Center (SLJSC) of University of Peradeniya started a 6 months Japanese Language Course for beginners.
The second conference on Sri Lanka โ Japan Collaborative Research (SLJCR โ 2014) was held on 15th December 2014 successfully at the Earlโs Regency Hotel, Kandy.
A delegation of nine students from Tokyo Institute of Technology along with two members of the staff visited the University of Peradeniya for a student exchange study program. They arrived in Sri Lanka on the 27th of February and had an orientation ceremony on the 28th after which they met with the Vice Chancellor of UoP. They spent their 9 day tour having exchange sessions with students from UoP, visiting Pollonaruwa, Sigiriya and historic places around Kandy. They also had five lectures from various members of UoP Staff. The program also included visits to many factories and industries. The closing ceremony was held on the 6th with the attendance of the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dean Agriculture, Dean Veterinary Medicine and Dean Science and the Director/Sri Lanka Japan Study center.
The University of Peradeniya hosted the Tokyo Institute of Technology Mission who visited the country as part of their undergraduate degree. The mission consisted of twelve undergraduate students and was lead by two staff members for a program that commenced on the 6th of September and drew to an end on the 14th of September, 2014. The student exchange program was also marked by a series of lectures conducted by Prof. Ranjith Dissanayake, Prof. Chandani Perera, Dr. Jayalath Edirisinghe, Dr. M. I. M. Mowjood and Dr. Shameen Jinadasa of the University of Peradeniya. During the program, the students received the opportunity to visit various venues in Sri Lanka, namely, Anuradhuapura, Sigiriya, Dambulla through which they learned about the ancient civilizations in Sri Lanka with a historical value. In addition, the industrial visit to Richard Peiris Tyre Company and 4ever skin naturals Pvt. Ltd. was also a memorable experience to them.
Four delegates from the University of Miyazaki, Japan visited the University of Peradeniya on the 17th of September, 2014. During the visit, the delegates met with the Deputy Vice Chancellor and some staff members of the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Arts of the University of Peradeniya to discuss the possible future collaborations between the University of Peradeniya and University of Miyazaki. Hence, the delegates discussed the possibilities of awarding scholarships for students to study in both Universities, initiating student exchange programs/ staff and student training programs between the two Universities. In addition, Prof. Wickramagamage, Prof. JagathGunathilake, and Mr. A. S. M. Nawfhal also discussed about possible future research collaborations in relation to GIS application, with the delegates of the University of Miyazaki. Dr. JayalathEdirisinghe and Dr. WasanthaWickramasinghe also had a discussion with the delegates of the University of Miyazaki about transportation and road traffic accidents.
Three delegates from the Utsunomiya University, Japan visited the University of Peradeniya on the 04th of September, 2014, and met with the Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, Prof. AtulaSenartne, on which occasion they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two Universities. During their visit, they also had an interaction session with the students of the University of Peradeniya to explain about their study programs, student exchange programs and the availability of scholarships. With the signing of the MoU, the University of Peradeniya expects to carry out more collaborative work with Utsunomiya University in the near future.
A group of students from the University of the Sacred Heart, Tokyo, Japan visited the University of Peradeniya on the 15th of August, 2014. The students were accompanied by Prof. Yoshiyuki Nagata and Prof. Naoki Mizushima to the University of Peradeniya as a part of their study tour to Sri Lanka. During the visit, the scholars of the University of the Sacred Heart had an initial discussion with the Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya and the Deputy Directors of the International Research Centre, University of Peradeniya, regarding the collaborative work that would be initiated between the two Universities.
The University of Peradeniya had the pleasure of welcoming Prof. TamashiroHiko and Dr. Kiyako Sato from the Hokkaido University, Japan on the 8th of August, 2014. The main aim of their visit to the University of Peradeniya was to develop further collaborations between the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka and Hokkaido University, Japan.
A workshop on E-Learning was conducted by Prof. Nishantha Giguruwa, Director at the Digital Technologies Innovation Centre, Asia Pacific University, Japan who visited the University of Peradeniya to invite new research collaborations. The workshop was held at the PGIS with staff members gaining hands on experience on using Blackboard and Moodle services and other applications all related to the education sector.
On the 17th of February 2014 a delegation consisting of Dr. Yoshiharu Mutoh, Dr. Seiichi Kawahara and Dr. AshuMarasinghe from Nagaoka University of Technology visited the University of Peradeniya where they met with the Vice Chancellor and held discussions regarding research collaborations.
On the 5th of February 2014 two resource persons visited the University of Peradeiya and conducted Seminars under the Public Lecture Series. The resource person were Prof. Mohan Edirisinghe (University College, London) who spoke on Bio-inspired Research at the Physical Science โ Life Science Interface; and Prof. Masaharu Komiyama (Yamanashi University, Japan)who spoke on Atoms and Molecules on Solid Surfaces Observed by Probe Microscopy. The seminar was attended by over 60 members of the Staff and students of UoP.
The Sri Lanka Japan Study Centre was a co-sponsor of the 2nd International Conference on โEmerging Sri Lanka: Sharing Japanese Governance and Development Experienceโ was organized by the Association of Sri Lankan Academics in Japanโ at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Ookayama Campus on Sunday, 9th June 2013 a presentation was made by Dr. Nanda Gunawardhana, Director of InRC regarding the Study centre.
The Conference on Sri Lanka Japan Collaborative Research (SLJCR-2013) was held as scheduled from 29th to 31st March 2013 quite successfully. The Conference was launched off with an inaugural ceremony that was held at Earlโs Regency. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Dr. Sunil Jayantha Nawarathne, the secretary to the Ministry of Higher Education. The Guest of Honor was His Excellency, the Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, Mr. Nobuhito Hobo. The Vice Chancellor and all the higher officials of the University of Peradeniya also participated in the event.
Mr. Sasai Daiji the First Secretary of the Japanese Embassy paid a visit to the Vice-Chancellor and had discussion on number of issues that will benefit the University of Peradeniya. Further he met members of the Oraganizing Committee of the Conference on Sri Lanka Japan Collaborative Research - 2013 and discussed on progress of the organizing activities of the conference.
