The prime objective of the SL-J Study Center is to further strenthen research collaboration between Sri Lanka and Japan. The Center was launched by Prof. Atula Senaratne, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya on 29th March, 2013 at the Ealr's Regency Hotel, Kandy, Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lanka-Japan Study Centre (SLJSC) of the University of Peradeniya was established on the 29th of March 2013 as a national center to promote collaborative research and studies between Sri Lanka and Japan. Since its inception, the SLJSC has worked towards promoting research collaborations between Sri Lankan and Japanese academics on various disciplines and disseminating this knowledge mainly through the annual Sri Lanka-Japan Research Congress.
The SLJSC is also working closely with various other institutions, academic bodies, associations and organizations such as the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Association of Sri Lankan Academics in Japan and a number of Japanese Universities to build awareness about the multitude of academic opportunities in Japan for Sri Lankan academics including undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as University Teachers in Sri Lanka. The Center works towards building new linkages and strengthening the existing linkages with Japanese Universities by connecting and supporting Sri Lankan academics to participate in short-term and long term training programmes/ Exchange programmes in Japanese universities; find facilities and services when they move to Japan for academic programmes; and participate in conferences for dissemination of knowledge.
One of the key programmes that the SLJSC has continuously hosted is the JICA Chair Programme which has been open even to the public. The JICA Chair Porgramme has been growing in popularity with thousands of enthusiasts registering every year from all over the country, and more participants wanting join on-site lectures at the beautiful Garden University of Peradeniya, even though the Programme is offered in the hybrid mode.
With a membership of nearly one-hundred academic staff members who have obtained their postgraduate degrees from a Japanese University, the Sri Lanka-Japan Study Center is dedicated to fostering the academic culture of the University with further collaborations with Japan
