Kandy

Kandy, the Hill Capital is the closest city to Peradeniya. Kandy was the last bastion of the Sinhala kings and is a charming city offering a living record of a magnificent past. Some say Kandy is the only other real 'coty' in Sri Lanka, other than Colombo. The easygoing capital of the hill country has a lot to offer - history, culture, forested hills and a touch of urban buzz. Only 115 km inland from the capital, climatically it is a world away due to its 500m altitude. Kandy was also the capital of the last Sinhalese kingdom. The town and the countryside around it, is lush and green and there are many pleasant walks both from the town or further afield. The town centre, close of Kandy�s picturesque lake set in a bowl if hills, is a delightful jumble of old shops, antique and gemstones specialists, a bustling market and a good selection of hotels and restaurants. Kandy is a romantic city any time of the year, but in August, this ancient capital becomes the venue of one of the most legendary festivals in Asia, the Festival of the August Moon when thousands of people from all parts of the country and from foreign countries throng to the Hill Capital to witness the magnificent spectacle.

Peradeniya

Peradeniya is a small town located in the Central Province of Sri Lanka, at an elevation of 500 meters above sea-level, at a distance of 110 km from Colombo. Peradeniya is 6 km away from Kandy, the second largest city in Sri Lanka and the gateway to the central highlands and the home to the sacred Temple of Tooth.Peradeniya is the location for the country’s largest and Asia’s finest botanical gardens. Conceived originally in 1371 as the Queen's pleasure garden, the premises were converted to Royal Botanic Gardensin 1821 by the British (1815-1948) six years after fall of the last King of Sri Lanka. In addition, the country’s herbarium, the largest University, the Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC) and the Head Quarters of the Departments of Agriculture and the Export Agriculture are also located in Peradeniya. 

University of Peradeniya

University of Peradeniya is the heir to a sixty - year old University tradition, which commenced with the inception of the University of Ceylon, the first institution of its kind established in Colombo on July 1, 1942 and shifted to the present site of great natural beauty at Peradeniya on 6th October 1952. The University of Peradeniya is located in the foot hills of the Hantana mountain range with the salubrious climate and with all the amenities necessary for a condusive learning environment. Today, the University consists of eight academic Faculties: Agriculture, Allied Health Sciences, Arts, Dental Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, Science, Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science. About 2500 undergraduates enter the University annually, to make up an undergraduate student population of about 10,000, while the total number of postgraduate students registered is over 1200.

Faculty of Engineering

The Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya is the oldest Faculty of Engineering in Sri Lanka founded in 1950 and shifted to the present location in 1964. Presently, the Faculty consists of eight academic Departments of Study, viz., Departments of Chemical & Process Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Engineering Management, Engineering Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, and Production Engineering, supported by several Units and Centres. The Faculty strives to equip its students with knowledge, skills and attitudes to attain competence as professional engineers, and to interact with industry and community for sustainable development of humankind. The thriving research community in the Faculty of Engineering has been pushing frontiers of knowledge while contributing to national development and has a solid reputation for innovative and pioneering work.
