History of Hilda Obeysekara Hall

Hilda Obeysekara Hall (HOH) holds a significant place in the history of the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, both in terms of its physical establishment and its cultural and educational contributions. The hall was established as the first female hostel on the university campus, originally named in honor of Lady (Paul) Pieris’ mother, Miss Hilda Obeysekara. It was officially opened in 1952, during the early years of the university’s relocation to Peradeniya. The establishment of the hall was influenced by the philanthropic contributions of Lady Pieris, known for her strong commitment to supporting education and research. Though not a formal scholar herself, Lady Pieris was a significant benefactor, providing large endowments to the university. Her generosity and her passion for women's education led to the decision by Sir Ivor Jennings, the first Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, to name the hall in honor of her mother, Hilda Obeysekara. The location of Hilda Obeysekara Hall at the foot of the Sangamiitha Hill adds an extra layer of significance. Sangamiitha Theri, a revered figure in Sri Lankan history, had given religious guidance to women, and this connection reflected the hall’s broader mission of empowering and uplifting women in society. Originally, the hall was dedicated exclusively to female students, providing essential accommodation in a time when the university had only a few halls of residence, and it became the first female hostel on the campus. However, in 1972, due to changes in student population and university requirements, Hilda Obeysekara Hall was converted into a male hostel.

The historical shift came full circle in 2009 when the hall was converted back into a female hostel, in response to the increasing female student population at the University of Peradeniya. Today, Hilda Obeysekara Hall stands as the second-largest female hostel on the campus, continuing its legacy of supporting female students, nurturing their academic pursuits, and fostering a sense of community and belonging. Through its history, Hilda Obeysekara Hall has come to represent not only the commitment to education but also the spirit of generosity and empowerment that Lady Obeysekara championed throughout her life.
