Kandy is the second-largest city on the island and the hill capital of Central Province, 115 km from Colombo. The city has been declared by the UNESCO as a world heritage city. It is located in between multiple mountain ranges, including the Knuckles and Hanthana, giving the city an elevation of 1,600 ft above sea level. Kandy has a relatively wetter and cooler temperatures than that of the tropical climate of the rest of the country, especially the coastal regions. The crown jewel of the city is the famed Sri Dalada Maligawa, also known as the Temple of the Tooth. The Kandy Esala Perahera (the Dalada Perahara procession of Kandy) also known as The Festival of the Tooth is a grand festival celebrated with elegant costumes and is held in July and August in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Kandy Lake is an attractive feature in the heart of the city of Kandy.
Peradeniya is a suburb of the city of Kandy. It is situated on the A1 main road, just a few kilometres west of Kandy city centre. Peradeniya is famous for the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in Asia. It is situated in a slope of the Mahaweli River and attracts many visitors from Sri Lanka as well as from abroad. Another key attribute of this city is the University of Peradeniya. The Department of Agriculture is also located here.
University of Peradeniya is the largest and oldest university in Sri Lanka, which was originally established as the University of Ceylon in 1942. Today, the University consists of nine academic Faculties: Agriculture, Allied Health Sciences, Arts, Dental Sciences, Engineering, Management, Medicine, Science, Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science and four postgraduate institutes; namely Postgraduate Institutes of, Agriculture (PGIA), Humanities and Social Sciences (PGIHS) and Science (PGIS) and Postgraduate School of Medicine (PGSM). It claims to have the largest government endowment by a higher education staff and faculties/departments.
The Faculty of Agriculture, which celebrated 70 years last year, offers three degree programs; Agricultural Technology and Management, Food Science and Technology and Animal Science and Fisheries. The Faculty comprise of eight departments with well-equipped state of the art laboratories and modern facilities, and three field stations and three research centers for teaching and research in all agricultural and allied fields. Faculty also supports the postgraduate programs through the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture. It has also grown to be the center of excellence in the region as well as in the globe with active foreign collaborations in teaching and research.
