This hall first provided residential facilities for male students in the year 2020. The inaugural Warden was Prof. D.D.K.S. Karunanayake, with Mr. J.M.S. Chathuranga serving as the Sub-Warden. From May 21, 2021, to May 7, 2022, the hall was repurposed to function as a University Quarantine Center, playing a pivotal role during that period. Since May 8, 2022, the facility has been exclusively designated as a hostel for female students and continues to serve in this capacity.
Nestled amidst the serene beauty of the University of Peradeniya, Mahakanda Hall is a dedicated residence for female students, offering a perfect blend of comfort and tranquility. Located near the verdant landscapes of Mahakanda, the hall enjoys breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and the distant Mahaweli River, embodying the natural charm that Peradeniya is renowned for. It is the farthest girls' hostel of the University of Peradeniya, situated along Sarasavigama Road near the historic Gal Bungalow. Mahakanda Hall was established in 2020 to provide a nurturing environment for academic and personal growth. With a capacity to accommodate up to 368 students, Mahakanda Hall combines modern facilities' comforts with its natural surroundings' calming beauty.
The common rules and regulations pertaining to the facilities of halls of residents are strictly imposed.
The hostel is situated in a calming environment, providing the residents with an ideal atmosphere to fully concentrate on their academics without any distractions. The building comprises four floors. Each floor is equipped with two bath units, comprising six shower cubicles and five toilets.
