Scope of the Initiative

The on-campus counselling service established at the Health Centre has a dedicated phone line 070 1 343 444 to contact the counsellors. Students seeking help can use the phone line to talk in an emergency or make an appointment with the counsellors. Initially, students seeking help have access to two professionally qualified, experienced Mental Health Counsellors on two days of the week from 12-2 pm and 4-6 pm. Walk-in counselling sessions are encouraged as much as possible. As the counsellors are not available 24 hours, at other times, Chief Medical Officer or the other medical officer at the Health Centre and after 4 pm, the nurse on call will attend to those seeking help. When sufficient funds are available, there would be a 24-hour -counselling service. If a student requires urgent psychiatric help due to severe mental and behavioural changes and carries a high risk of attempting suicide or harm to others, the Chief Medical Officer would direct them to the Teaching Hospital, Peradeniya after contacting the on-call consultant psychiatrist.
