The six-storied new library extension building was declared open by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Upul B. Dissanayake on Friday 28th August 2020. This long awaited and much needed facility has been constructed as a left wing to the old Main Library building and connected to the old building by a bridge. The wing includes an auditorium, an art gallery cum museum, E-library and an IT lab and expected to house the Ceylon Room collection and some valuable collections donated by several eminent personalities.

Prior to the opening ceremony chanting of 'Seth Pirith' by the Maha sanga and other religious observances took place to invoke blessings. The occasion was graced by the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Deans of faculties, Directors of Institutes, the Librarian, the Acting Registrar, Bursar, members of the council, members of the senate, academic and non academic staff members of the University of Peradeniya, retired staff members of the Library system and Journalists.
