About

History of the Hall

Being the largest female hostel of the University of Peradeniya currently accommodating over 1200 undergraduates, Ramanathan Hall is a landmark situated on the side of Galaha Road which runs through the University. It was designed by Mr. Shirley de Alwis and was established in the 1950s as a male hostel and was later converted to a females’. The Hall is named in honour of Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan (1851 – 1930), a respected national leader and a pioneer of Sri Lanka’s (then Ceylon) struggle for independence. Standing amidst the scenic greenery of the Garden University, Ramanathan Hall provides its residents with adequate facilities for a perfect balance between academic and recreational activities. It also accommodates a limited number of temporary and permanent academic staff members of the University. The administration of the Hall is under a part-time Warden, a full-time Sub Warden, Senior Academic Sub Warden, and six part-time Academic Sub Wardens. Apart from the rules and regulations generally imposed by the University for undergraduates living on-campus, Ramanathan Hall also has a set of guidelines for its residents aimed at ensuring a safe, friendly, and delightful experience throughout their period of stay. This memorable and iconic residential hall has preserved its beauty and pride for over six decades now and looks more welcoming than ever to the prospective entrants of the University of Peradeniya.
