The University Research Council is pleased to announce that the virtual training program on "Introduction to MATLAB for Biologists" to be offered for the university community is scheduled for September 28, 2021 from 9.00 am to 12.00 pm by Dr.Nalin Harishchandra from the Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya.
MATLAB is a high-performance language for technical computing. It integrates computation, visualization, and programming in an easy-to-use environment where problems and solutions are expressed in familiar mathematical notation. The objective of this virtual programme is to give an introduction to MATLAB for those who do research/teaching on biological sciences. As the attendees can come with different levels of programming experiences, ranging from novice, beginner, intermediate to specialist of a certain package, our aim is to provide attendees, that is you, not just with the essential skills to use MATLAB, but also with some advanced skills which will allow you to automate processes so that you can use MATLAB efficiently in your own research. We will not use any of the specialized MATLAB toolboxes as they may not be relevant to all. Nevertheless, we hope that the knowledge and experience you will be gaining through the webinar will make it easier for you to use those toolboxes as well. Download flyerUniversity level education is going through a major transformation in various ways. In engineering the transformation is driven by the approach "to the market", directed towards "usefulness for industry" and the "just in time" knowledge and skills, entrepreneurship and various "selling/influencer skills" (under various names like "soft" or "21st century" skills etc) while still trying to keep the academic values which universities are known for. A few years ago it was, although many possibilities existed, almost unheard of "remote education" in the sense of "remote lectures" or "remote laboratories" etc. The Covid-19 pandemic has however given a new perspective on this.
The presentation will center around a controversial discussion about how a global educational collaboration can be developed such that "lower ranked" universities might use high-quality educational material from colleagues in other countries to create own courses and programs without having specialists in all areas
