The University Research Council is pleased to announce that the lecture on “Research Tools for Collecting, Writing, Publishing, and Disseminating your Research” to be offered for the university community is scheduled for November 4^th,2022 from 10:00 am until 11:30 am by Dr. Nader Ale Ebrahim via Zoom.

“Research Tools” enable researchers to collect, organize, analyze, visualize and publicize research outputs. Dr. Nader has collected over 700 tools that enable researchers to follow the correct path in research and ultimately produce high-quality research outputs with more accuracy and efficiency. “Research Tools” consists of a hierarchical set of nodes. It has four main nodes:

1. Searching the literature
2. Writing a paper
3. Targeting suitable journals
4. Enhancing the visibility and impact of the research

This webinar will provide an overview of the most important tools from searching the literature to disseminating the researcher’s outputs. The e-skills learned from the workshop are useful across various research disciplines and research institutions.

During the past twenty years the conference has been organized mainly in India as a biennial event by the Swedish South Asian Network on Fermented Foods (SASNET-FF). This year it will be organized jointly by The University Research Council of University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka and SASNET-FF in association with SASNET-Lund University, Sweden; Dr. Varghese Kurien Centre of Excellence, Institute of Rural Management, Anand, India; Copenhagen University, Denmark; Kamdhenu University, India; Anand Agricultural University, India; Indian Dairy Association (Gujarat State), Gut Microbiota and Probiotic Science Foundation India, Probiotic Association of India and University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka.

The conference aims at providing a platform for academicians, researchers, clinicians, nutritionists, social workers, industry personnel and students to present, discuss and debate their research findings pertaining to fermented foods, their health benefits and emerging production technologies.

Horizon Europe (2021-2027) is the 9th European Union Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. It is the biggest and most ambitious programme of its kind ever with a budget of over €95 billion. The 5 defined missions are related to cancer, carbon-neutral cities, climate change, oceans and waters, and soil health. Sri Lankan scientist can participate in Pillar-I as individuals and Pillar-II as members of consortiums. Under Horizon Europe programme one of the main requirements is defining the impacts and pathways to impact. In the evaluation criteria it emphasizes the impacts evaluation under:

• Credibility of the pathways to achieve the expected outcomes and impacts specified in the work programme, and the likely scale and significance of the contributions from the project.
• Suitability and quality of the measures to maximise expected outcomes and impacts, as set out in the dissemination and exploitation plan, including communication activities.

The University Research Council is organizing a training program on Laboratory Management for technical officers encompassing laboratory safety, maintenance of common laboratory equipment, calibration, Good Laboratory Practices [GLPs] and laboratory accreditation. Technical experts from Hayleys Life Sciences and officers from Sri Lanka Accreditation Board will serve as resource persons.

The training program is scheduled for Tuesday April 6th 2021 from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. at the PGIS. The medium of instruction will be both English and Sinhala.

University level education is going through a major transformation in various ways. In engineering the transformation is driven by the approach "to the market", directed towards "usefulness for industry" and the "just in time" knowledge and skills, entrepreneurship and various "selling/influencer skills" (under various names like "soft" or "21st century" skills etc) while still trying to keep the academic values which universities are known for. A few years ago it was, although many possibilities existed, almost unheard of "remote education" in the sense of "remote lectures" or "remote laboratories" etc. The Covid-19 pandemic has however given a new perspective on this.

The presentation will center around a controversial discussion about how a global educational collaboration can be developed such that "lower ranked" universities might use high-quality educational material from colleagues in other countries to create own courses and programs without having specialists in all areas
